Australia broke a new temperature record for the winter season with an impressive 41.6C recorded at the Yampi Sound military camp on the country's north-west coast. This is 0.4°C above the previous record of 41.2°C set in August 2020 at West Roebuck in the same region. The Australian Meteorological Center has announced that this new record is, for now, only "temporary". Before it's officially confirmed, researchers will analyze the data to make sure it's not a local anomaly or a technical glitch..

Australia normally goes through winter between June and August, but this year's extreme temperatures are a clear indication of global climate change. This unusual rise in temperatures comes amid warnings from the scientific community that 2024 could become the hottest year ever recorded on Earth.

Recent data from the European Copernicus Observatory (EMS) shows that from the start of the year to July, global temperatures were on average 0.7°C higher than the 1991-2020 average. These developments underline the seriousness of the climate crisis and the need for urgent measures to mitigate the effects of global warming.
