Over 170 employees of the spinning & weaving mill Textila Oltul - Covasna were laid off on Monday following a conclusion that these lines of business are not profitable. Tibor Kelemen, director of the Covasna County Employment Agency, said the initial list comprised 228 people, but the rest had left before being fired or had been reassigned to tailoring.
"The Chinese market produces the kind of cloth they make at Textila a lot cheaper, despite the import costs. There"s also the matter of finding enough people with the required qualifications," he said. Covasna County Prefect Gyorgy Ervin said the 173 laid off employees were going to receive unemployment benefits and that many of them would soon become eligible for pension. On the bright side, news is a new factory is going to be opened in the county and that the personnel requirement would be 250.
