"The pressure of the new banking regulations in Europe will generate moves on the domestic market"

The pressure of the new banking regulations in Europe will generate "moves" on the Romanian market, considers Răzvan Nan, senior manager, banking advisory at KPMG, who expects that this year we will see significant changes in the shareholder structure of Romanian lenders.

He said that, given that foreign lenders represent over 80% of the Romanian banking system, and Romania has been placed in the "non-core" by the parent banks of those operating on the Romanian market, the trend of significant changes will continue in 2014-2015.

"We will see transfers of portfolios to the investment funds", Mr. Nan said.

According to KPMG studies, the European banking regulation didn't use to have an impact on the economic growth prior to the sovereign debt crisis, but now, in Europe, the tightening of the regulations in the sector is having a significant negative effect on the evolution of the economy, as the growth is too tepid, and the unemployment is rising.

Răzvan Nan said: "The constant introduction of new regulations in the sector may has pushed many economies, especially in Europe, past the < balance point > and into a situation where the cost is greater than the benefits - which translates into a constant negative influence on the economic growth which is greater than the benefit of preventing possible periods of financial instability in the future".
