The sports infrastructure built in recent years allows our country to successfully bid for hosting international sporting events. The capital city officially enters the race to host a new UEFA Europa League final. The Mayor of the Capital, Nicuşor Dan, has announced that he has signed the commitment to submit a bid for hosting the UEFA Europa League final in 2026 or 2027. He mentioned that the current timeline is tight, with the deadline for submitting the candidacy as the host city being November 15. According to Nicuşor Dan: "I have signed the commitment to submit a bid to host the UEFA Europa League final in 2026 or 2027. The schedule is tight, and the deadline for cities to submit their candidacy is November 15. Three other countries are also bidding to host the events: Germany, Turkey, and Scotland. After UEFA's deliberations, the cities that will host the two finals will be announced in May 2024."
Nicuşor Dan expressed confidence that, just like with other sporting events hosted by Bucharest, this will be a pleasant experience: "It would be an honor for the capital to host such an event, which will improve the city's image and attract tourists. The Bucharest City Hall has an ongoing protocol with the Romanian Football Federation and UEFA, through which it undertakes to fulfill the general organization requirements requested by UEFA. These requirements include launching certain investments to bring certain elements of the National Arena up to date, as well as the development of a dedicated mobility plan for the event and the conclusion of the necessary protocols."
The Mayor also recalled that Bucharest previously hosted a Europa League final in 2012 at the National Arena, Romania's largest stadium, which was inaugurated on September 6, 2011. Additionally, the capital city hosted matches during the UEFA Euro 2020 football championship and the UEFA European U21 Championship.
