ECON, the commission for monetary and economic affairs of the European Parliament yesterday voted on the opinion expressed by Romanian MEP Sabin Cutaş, speaking on behalf of European Socialists and Democrats. According to a press release sent to our editors, the amendments proposed by Cutaş, which were asking for the prioritization of the Nabucco project by the European Union, both in terms of its political profile and funding, were adopted by the ECON.

Cuţaş said: "The Nabucco project represents an alternative to the current gas sources of the European Union, as it is the only way to eliminate the Russian monopoly. Because of this, I hope that the recommendations of the Committee For Monetary And Economic Affairs will be taken over by the Committee for Industry, Research and Energy".

The vote of the Committee for Industry, Research and Energy on the report on guaranteeing the security of the provision of natural gas will take place at the end of February, with the vote of the plenary assembly scheduled for late March 2010.
