The European currency rose for the fourth day in a row, as the official exchange rate of the Central Bank stood at 4.1597 lei/euro, up 1.68 bani, compared to Friday"s rate, when an Euro stood at 4.1429 lei/euro.

Early yesterday, the Euro was trading at 4.1580 lei/euro on the interbank market, after rising on Friday and closing the day 4.1510 lei/Euro.

Yesterday"s highest price that the Euro was trading at was 4.1600 lei.

The analysts of ING Bank Romania were expecting a relatively static evolution of the exchange rate yesterday. One of their reports says: "In spite of all this, the national currency depreciated outside the local trading hours, in tune with the other currencies in the region and with the European stock indexes, in a move which seemed correlated with the news that the Securities Exchange Commission of the United States was accusing Goldman Sachs of fraud. "ING Bank" analysts yesterday said that, due to dwindling risk appetite, the leu would continue its depreciation. They say an intervention of the Central Bank is possible if the leu were to continue to slide towards 4.20 lei/Euro.
