The government will look for a strategic investor in Tarom by the end of the year and will privatize the air carrier when market conditions will allow it, a letter of intent agreed by the Government and the IMF states, quoted by Mediafax. Tarom was included on the list of companies monitored by the IMF as part of the new agreement, and the financial institution will assess the losses and the arrears of the air carrier.
Under the current agreement with the IMF, several companies controlled by the Ministry of Transports have been placed under observation: CFR SA, CFR Călători, the Romanian National Highway and National Roads Company (CNADNR), Metrorex, CFR Marfă and Electrificare CFR.
Last year, the number of passengers that Tarom carried increased 24% compared to 2009, from 1.77 million travelers to 2.2 million, according to preliminary data from the company.
Tarom expects that this year expenses will be equal to revenues, as opposed to the forecasted profit of 19.8 million lei last year, according to the draft budget for 2011. The company posted a loss of 90.99 million lei in 2009, as opposed to the expected profit of 760,000 lei.
