The hunting associations get amazing incomes managing hunting fields

Ziarul BURSA #English Section / 8 iunie 2004

Hunting can be a tremendous business for people who manage to get a hunting field from the State. The fee for hunting one single animal is EUR 250, meaning ROL ten million. For this price, the "Zimbrul Iasi" hunting association of Iasi can pay its annual rent for the "Birnova" hunting field with a duck wing or something alike. This association pays the smallest fee possible to the State for the right to hunt deers, peacocks and bears: the price is ROL 2.4 million yearly, for ten years. Most of the Romanian hunting fields are managed for less than ROL ten million. The largest fee is paid for the Colibita hunting field, in Bistrita-Nasaud: ROL 46.8 million yearly.

The price is set up in Bucharest and it depends on the position (in the field, amongst the hills or in the mountains) and the quantity of hunting game per hectare.

The Government shared the hunting fields: 30% are managed by the State, through the Forests Regie Autonome, while 70% are managed by private associations or the General Association of Sportive Hunters and Fishermen. Of everything they cash, they pay nothing to the State, because at the end of the license all investments will become property of the State.

Usually, hunting fields are licensed for ten years. The only exception is the Almasu Mare-Fagu Balc hunting field, where the "Zimbrul" Bucharest association took a 49 years license for ROL 10.8 million yearly. The association concluded a management contract with a local company, "Wild Boar Club" SRL Balc, managed by Ion Tiriac through some offshore company. But no one knows who else is controlling the other hunting fields.
