The Minister of Justice, Alina Gorghiu, sent a guideline to the general prosecutor, Alex Florenta, regarding the intensification of the activity of the Public Ministry in terms of combating drug trafficking and consumption.

"I sent a guideline to the general prosecutor, Alex Florenta, for the Public Ministry to intensify the activity of combating forms of crime related to the sphere of illicit drugs. The action plans must also cover the damage recovery component", declared Alina Gorghiu.

The approach of the Minister of Justice takes place in the context in which the Judicial Inspection has started a control at the national level regarding the situation of the criminal files related to drug crimes.

"Recent data from DIICOT confirms that the fight against the drug phenomenon requires a joint effort. Seven people were detained in Constanţa for drug trafficking, human trafficking, money laundering, following an investigation launched in November 2022. Another trafficker was caught in Cluj", Minister Alina Gorghiu stated on the official Facebook page.

According to the Minister of Justice, 4,665 cases related to drug trafficking or consumption were resolved in 2023, although the number of prosecutors is very low.

"To understand the situation well: only 14 prosecutors work in the Section for Combating Drug Trafficking in the central structure of DIICOT. Which have 7,000 drug files in the works, of which 2,700 were opened in the first 6 months", said Alina Gorghiu.

According to the provisions of art. 131 of the Constitution, prosecutors carry out their activity according to the principle of legality, impartiality and hierarchical control under the authority of the Minister of Justice. This does not mean that the Public Ministry is subordinate to the Minister of Justice.

According to art. 66 para. (3) of Law 304/2022, "the Minister of Justice can ask the general prosecutor of the Prosecutor's Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice or, as the case may be, the general prosecutor of the National Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office for information on the activity of the prosecutor's offices and give written instructions regarding to the measures to be taken to prevent and combat crime".
