The exhibition "The Universe of Salvador Dali," which presents, for the first time in Romania, in over 10 exhibition spaces, a selection of creations by the Catalan artist, including 170 works - sculptures, graphics, engravings, lithographs, miniatures in gold, rubies, diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, and glass, as well as surrealist furniture illustrating the genius of the extravagant Dali, will open today at ARCUB - Hanul Gabroveni. The exhibition, which has traveled for 13 years through major cities in Europe, is organized by the City Hall of Bucharest, through ARCUB - the Cultural Center of Bucharest Municipality, in partnership with Hadran Events. It brings, for the first time to Bucharest, art objects from the most important private collection containing works signed by Salvador Dali, belonging to the renowned art collector Beniamino Levi, who personally knew the artist in the 1960s and was his agent.
The Mayor of Bucharest, Nicuşor Dan, invited Bucharesters to visit the exhibition, characterizing it as "very interesting and comprehensive about several stages of the evolution of this great artist": "I was very pleased to see this Dali exhibition. I believe Bucharest is growing. The fact that we simultaneously have a Dali exhibition, a Picasso exhibition, a Brauner exhibition means a lot for our city. I invite Bucharesters to come to these exhibitions because only when you enter into a direct relationship with the great ones, you get out of provincialism. Education and culture shape identity. That's what we are, what we become on the realm of consciousness, and it's important to interact with the great ones." The mayor confessed that he would have liked to see this Dali exhibition 30 years ago: "I would have liked to see this exhibition 30 years ago. Now I have already found many things I knew about Dali, and somehow, I'm looking forward to the Brauner exhibition." He characterized the exhibition at ARCUB as "very interesting and comprehensive about several stages of the evolution of this great artist."
Raluca Ganea, head of projects and cultural programs at ARCUB, stated: "We managed to provide the spaces, together with all the utilities and the proper functioning for five months of the exhibition. We worked together with all the departments in ARCUB, on the promotion side, production side, everything that meant logistics, bringing the exhibition from Budapest, and everything related to promotion and the budget. However, our partner Hadran Events covers the actual expenses, and we will recover part of the investment from ticket sales. We have been working for four months, but to succeed in bringing the exhibition, all the pre-production work, we worked for almost a year."
"The Universe of Salvador Dali" aims to reveal the foundations behind Dali's inspired genius and to offer a better understanding of his art and life through sculptures such as "Spatial Venus," embodying the theme of femininity, melted clocks from the "Dance of Time" series, "The Snail and the Angel," "Surrealist Angel," exploring Dali's relationship with the church and spirituality, art objects made of colored glass paste, the result of Dali's collaboration with the renowned Daum crystalware, gold objects inlaid with precious stones inspired by the jewelry of Louis XIV's court, rare illustrations addressing a distorted alternative of reality, such as "After 50 Years of Surrealism," and classical literature themes like "Much Ado About Shakespeare." At the same time, surrealist furniture objects, inspired by seemingly banal sources, such as the "Mae West Lips Sofa," demonstrate the versatility and versatility of the one who redefined how we perceive art. Additionally, the exhibition provides an interactive experience through modern technology, allowing visitors to interact virtually with some of Dali's most famous works and symbols and explore the hidden details of his works. The exhibition can be visited until May 12, 2024.
