The head of the Russian diplomacy, Sergey Lavrov, who was in Damascus yesterday for a meeting with president Bashar al-Assad, was acclaimed by thousands of Syrians who gathered to express their thanks to Russia. "Thanks to Russia! Thanks to China!", the crowd gathered in Mazze, on the outskirts of Damascus, shouted, according to videos broadcasted by the public Syrian television.
Lavrov's convoy was welcomed by thousands of Syrian and Russian flags.
According to the state owned television, the crowd gathered "in praise of Russia's stance, which supports Syria and its people as well as the reforms which were begun" by this country. "Sergey Lavrov and Mikhail Fradkov (the head of the foreign intelligence service, NDLR) have arrived in Damascus for a meeting with president Bashar al-Assad", according to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
On Sunday, Moscow announced that Lavrov would be making a visit in Damascus to discuss the quick passing of "indispensable democratic reforms" in Syria.
