The Traian Vuia Airport in Timisoara, the main airport in the western part of Romania, has announced the successful implementation and commissioning of a major upgrade on their security system following investments of 2.1 million EUR to ensure alignment to European airport security standards.
Another upgrade is scheduled for completion in the first half of 2009. "Only two of the five security sub-systems have been commissioned for the time being. The project continues until June 2009. What has been done so far was financed by the State. We will add a perimeter security system for 3.4 million EUR. That means that we will cover a radius of 12 kilometres with CCTV and motion sensors. Similar systems have been installed in the airports of Cluj, Sibiu, Targu Mures and Baneasa," said Dan Idolu, General Manager of the Traian Vuia Airport in Timisoara.
The investment will total 5.5 million EUR by 30 June 2009. Among others, the airport has purchased a cargo luggage transportation and control system, nine x-ray scanners for luggage, parcels and other cargo, four automatic explosives detectors and 15 mobile metal detectors. The cargo luggage transportation and control system ensures an integrated security control solution organized onto five layers of control. Additionally, all luggage will be logged, bar-coded and entered into the global SITA system, which will enable the operators to trace it anywhere in the system. Another advantage is that the plane"s load can be calculated and monitored more accurately.
The check-in area and the luggage processing area have been upgraded, too. The luggage conveyor has been replaced with a 25-meter one that can disburse 1,200 pieces of luggage per hour. The entire luggage transportation and control system cost 1.3 million EUR.
