The "Traian Vuia" International Airport in Timisoara has started the new year by initiating three lawsuits to recover debts of 150,000 EUR from three low-cost airlines. Two of the cases will be tried in Italian courts, while the third has been referred to the Court of Arbitration of the Timisoara Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture.

According to the airport"s legal counsel, Alexandra Avram, quoted by Agerpres, the three companies - Volare Airlines, Alpi Eagles and Jetran Air - owe 60,000 EUR, 12,000 EUR and, respectively, 80,000 EUR for overdue operating and handling fees, as per the contracts they signed with the airport.

Although the Timisoara Airport does not receive too may low-cost flights, General Manager Dan Idolu pointed out that, amid a constant increase in passenger traffic for several years, Wizz Air had announced plans to invest 100 million EUR for a base in Timisoara, including three Airbus A320 aircraft.

Negotiations between the airport and Wizz Air lasted for two years. The latter is set to become the largest low-cost operator in that part of Romania, with 22 flights, including some to London (Luton), Rome (Fiumicino), Dortmund (as of 11 March, 2009), and, as of May, Milan (Bergamo), Barcelona, Paris (Beauvis), Valencia and Venice (Treviso).
