Our country leads a detached top...tragic. Romania is by far in first place in the European Union when it comes to drowning deaths, given that, in 2021, approximately 21% of all victims of this type of incident in the EU bloc were reported in our country, according to published data by Eurostat.
After the medals won by David Popovici at the Olympic Games in the swimming competition, there was talk about the need to introduce swimming in schools, not necessarily for performance sports, but especially for obtaining a minimum of skills, which can be life-saving.
According to Eurostat data, in 2021, 5,004 drowning deaths were reported in the European Union, 532 more than in 2020 (4,472). But, among the member states, Romania is by far in first place, with 1,033 drowning deaths in 2021, approximately 21% of the total recorded at EU level. France follows, at a distance, with 653 drowning deaths, Poland (466) and Germany (457). The lowest number of drowning deaths were reported in Luxembourg (1), Malta (3) and Cyprus (9). The breakdown by gender shows that the share of drowning deaths is twice as high among men than among women, in almost all EU countries. The exceptions are Austria, with 33 drowning deaths among men and 19 among women, and Malta, one man and two women. In Romania, of the 1,033 drowning deaths reported in 2021, 700 were men and 333 were women. Education must enter the area of prevention, not only at a theoretical but also a practical level.
