The trade union confederation Alfa and the chemical and petrochemical industry unions are supporting the Oltchim Union in their demand that Oltchim stay operational despite the ongoing environmental problem at Arpechim, Oltchim"s main ethylene supplier. Arpechim"s environmental license has been suspended over the owner"s failure to fulfill environmental investments. The Oltchim Union believes that Arpechim"s shutdown can have extremely grave social and economic consequences.
According to the unions, this situation could lead to the termination of 3,000 jobs at Oltchim and 7,000 jobs at other companies in Valcea County that are dependant on Oltchim. The unions also claim that the Arpechim shutdown will decrease Oltchim"s turnover by 30 million EUR per month and a 40% cut on the overall industrial production in Valcea County. The unions are also demanding that necessary environmental measures be implemented concurrently with the normal operation of Arpechim
