United Airlines, the second largest airline in the US, said they would lay off 950 pilots starting this summer as part of a plan to reduce staff by up to 1,600 people. According to spokesperson Megan McCarthy, the company currently has some 6,600 pilots. The announcement also indicates that United Airlines is planning to reduce the fleet and take further global measures to remain competitive on a market strongly affected by hiking fuel prices. UAL Corp, United Airlines" parent company, has already taken measures to cope with continuously increasing fuel prices, including the grounding of 100 aircraft to reduce domestic capacity by 17-18% and international capacity by 4-5%.
