At the end of the year, important elections took place at the University of Bucharest. Prof. Dr. Marian Preda has been re-elected as the Rector of the University of Bucharest for the term 2023-2028. According to the University of Bucharest (UB), Marian Preda was re-elected with 633 votes, representing 67.70% of the total votes cast. A total of 1,363 members of the academic community of the University of Bucharest had the right to vote in these elections, including 1,226 teaching and research staff employed on an indefinite basis and 137 student members of the University Senate and faculty councils. The election results for the rector position will be validated in the University Senate meeting on December 13, followed by the issuance of the minister's order to confirm Professor Marian Preda in the position of rector, according to current legislation, as reported by UB.
Professor and sociologist Marian Preda has continuously worked at the University of Bucharest since 1990. He served in the leadership of the Faculty of Sociology and Social Work at the University of Bucharest from 2000 to 2015, first as vice-dean (2000-2008), then as dean (2008-2015). He was the President of the University Senate from 2015 to 2019 and the Rector of the University of Bucharest from 2019 to 2023. Among other responsibilities, Professor Marian Preda has been teaching courses in Strategic Management, Organizational Behavior, Social Policies, and Sociology of Time since 1994. Marian Preda is part of the first series of sociology students after the 1989 Revolution and earned a master's degree in Social Policies at the University of Bucharest in 2005 and a second master's degree in Business Administration at Tiffin University in the USA in 2006. He has undergone several training stages abroad, including at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge and George Washington University in Washington, with a Fulbright scholarship. In the last 30 years, alongside his academic career, he has served as a manager, consultant, or expert in numerous projects with national or international funding, collaborating with organizations such as the UN-especially UNICEF and UNDP-World Bank, Bernard Brunhes International, and the European Commission. Marian Preda was the President of the Presidential Commission for the Analysis of Social and Demographic Risks (2009-2010), a member of the National Population Commission (2007-2009, 2010-2012), President of the Romanian Sociologists Society (2010-2012), and President of the National Statistical Council of the National Institute of Statistics (2016-2018, 2018-2020).
