UPC Romania Acquires Internet Provider Sebmar Focsani

Cable TV operator UPC Romania has concluded the acquisition of Focsani-based internet provider Sebmar. The acquisition is part of the company"s development strategy on the Romanian cable communications market, according to a company press release, quoted by NewsIn. Thus, UPC Romania has added approximately 2,000 new customers to its existing portfolio of over 1,400,000 cable TV subscribers.

The company is one of the largest providers of Triple Play services - telephony, TV and Internet, constantly expanding its range of products and services, following the gradual acquisition of several local cable communication networks. UPC"s most important acquisition was that of Astral Telecom in 2005, along with other 13 companies.

In 2003, UPC Romania merged by absorbtion with seven another Romanian companies: Aparatura Electronica Seltron Cluj Napoca, Diplomatic International Comimpex Focsani, Control Cable Venture Ploiesti, Somax Botosani, Selektronic Sfantu Gheorghe, Portal Export-Import Cluj-Napoca and Multicanal Holding Bucharest. In the past few years, UPC Romania has also acquired the companies Satba Bacau, Eurosat Bacau, Conex Sat Roman, Focus Sat, Minisat and Control.

UPC Romania is affiliated with Liberty Global Inc, a leading international cable operator offering video, telephone, and broadband Internet services. Liberty Global operates broadband communications networks in 17 countries principally located in Europe, Japan, Chile, and Australia. Liberty Global"s operations also include significant media and programming businesses such as Jupiter TV in Japan and Chellomedia in Europe. The company has over 20,000 employees and approximately 16 million customers.
