Volksbank Romania is planning to rank fifth among Romanian banks ordered by assets in about two years, moving up from the current tenth position. The target for end-2007 is the eighth place, according to President Gerald Schreiner. The bank concluded last year on the eleventh position with assets worth 4.66 billion RON (1.38 billion EUR). By the end of Q1:2007, the bank had moved to the tenth position.
"Shareholders care about profitability, not ranking, but we are sure that we can achieve profitability targets and advance in the asset ranking at the same time," Schreiner told NewsIn. At the end of last year, Volksbank was outranked by BCR, BRD, Raiffeisen, HVB - Tiriac (which later merged with Unicredit), Transilvania, BancPost, ING, Alpha, CEC and ABN Amro.
