Warsaw Stock Exchange Seeks Romanian Investors

The Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE) seeks to attract both Romanian investors and Romanian companies interested in becoming listed in Poland. "We want to show that we are an international stock exchange," said Dariusz Marszalek, the WSE Spokesman.

The WSE lists 296 companies including 12 from outside Poland. The market capitalization stands at 136 billion EUR. Last year"s transactions totaled 91 billion EUR. Derivatives transactions amounted to 97 billion EUR. Polish pension funds are some of the most ardent investors on WSE. By law, such funds can invest 40% of their assets on WSE and only 5% on other exchanges.

WSE is one of the most active exchanges in Europe in terms of IPOs, ranking 5th in Europe with 38 IPOs worth 1.1 billion EUR in 2006 and 3rd in Europe with 35 IPOs worth 1.7 billion EUR in 2005. This year 15 IPOs have already been handled, with full-year estimates indicating around 60 IPOs.
