Water crisis in Greece

Versiunea în limba română

Faced with a shortage this summer, Athens' water management operator will activate additional sources to strengthen the supply network of the Greek capital, according to an announcement cited by AFP. The additional sources are located in Mount Parnassus and Lake Yliki, near Athens, said Charalambos Sahinis, the general director of EYDAP, to the Greek news agency ANA. In recent months, EYDAP has classified Attica, the region around Athens, as being on yellow alert, urging the 3.7 million residents, or one-third of Greece's population, to carefully monitor their water consumption. The main water reservoir in Attica, the artificial lake Mornos, located 200 km west of Athens and fed by the Evinos River, showed a 30% decrease in its reserves at the beginning of July compared to last year, according to data from EYDAP, mainly due to the prolonged drought. On Thursday, Charalambos Sahinis launched a campaign to raise awareness about water conservation among residents and tourists in Athens. The latest report by the Greek Ministry of the Environment, made public on August 1, highlighted the emergency created by the prolonged drought in 15 regions of the country, particularly in Thessaly and Central Greece. Lake Ozeros in Western Greece has reached its lowest level in history, just a few meters above sea level.
