International tourism generated revenues of 735 billion USD / 645 billion EUR last year, with tourists spending over 2 billion USD, according to the World Tourism Organization press conference dedicated to introducing the master plan for the development of Romanian tourism.
Europe was the destination of the 58% of the international tourists last year, with each tourist spending an average of 830 USD/trip. South Europe and Mediterranean Europe generated revenues of 147 billion USD, with Central Europe on the third position (89 billion USD) and North Europe fourth with 54 billion USD.
Romania welcomed 6,037,000 foreign tourists in 2006, of whom 2,803,000 tourists from EU countries. The total number of tourists (foreign and Romanain) spent some 2.95 billion EUR.
