In recent years, young people from our country have begun to expand their options for international studies to new European and even global destinations. According to recent statistics, the popularity of countries such as Belgium and Italy has increased significantly, due to lower costs and a diversified educational offer. Spain also enters the top of the most sought-after study destinations, alongside countries such as the Netherlands and Great Britain, which remain in the preferences of young people. Alexandra Bădescu, Deputy General Manager of IntegralEdu said: "This year we registered a doubling of applications for Belgium, and Italy is growing, gaining popularity due to lower living costs and increased interest in the local culture and language. Also, among young people there is an increasingly obvious tendency for study options in Spain, which is located in the top 5 study destinations. Of course, the Netherlands and Great Britain remain at the top with the most applications, but, compared to previous years, we have noticed this tendency of candidates dissipating towards other study destinations in the European space. An explanation could lie in the fact that more and more universities in these countries are making efforts to introduce as many programs as possible with teaching in English, analyzing study trends and labor market dynamics. I also noticed that there are applications and interest for universities in Malta and Canada". During the World Education Fair (WEF) event, which will take place in Bucharest on September 28, young Romanians will be able to discover the latest trends and scholarship opportunities. This international educational fair will bring together more than 30 educational institutions from 13 countries. Among the new destinations and programs showcased at the fair are pilot study opportunities in Lithuania and arts in Australia.

Increasing applications for Germany

There is also a growing interest in studying in Germany, where tuition costs can vary between 0 and 1,500 euros per semester. "We expect an increase in Romanian applicants to German universities in 2025, especially due to the low fees and the educational facilities offered," Bădescu explained. Fields on the Rise: Hospitality Management and Engineering. Another observed trend is the increased interest in hospitality management, a field that recently entered the top 5 of the most sought-after majors. Other areas of interest include international business, European studies and media production, but also niches such as marine biology, sound production and visual arts. For the first time at WEF, young people will also be able to explore the Australia Performing Arts conservatory, which offers vocational courses for those aspiring to careers in acting, film production or dance.

Pilot program in Lithuania

A novelty of great interest at WEF will be the debut of BAA Training Lithuania's "Pilot Runway" program, a project dedicated to training pilots within the Avia Solutions Group, the largest ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) supplier in the world. The two-year program is 90% funded by a loan of approximately euro105,000, with students paying an advance of just euro10,000. After completing the courses, they benefit from guaranteed jobs in piloting. The training includes 9 months of theoretical studies in Vilnius, Lithuania and 9 months of practical training at Lleida Airport near Barcelona.

Opportunities in educational camps and Work & Travel

Demand for boot camps is up 22% year-on-year, with new destinations such as Japan and South Korea. More and more young people are turning to specialized camps in fields such as architecture, medicine, entrepreneurship or artificial intelligence. In addition, the Work and Travel program continues to be a popular option, with a 14% increase in the number of students approved for the J1 visa in 2024. Another highlight at the fair is London International High School, which has introduced a pilot program in which certain subjects, such as exact sciences, are taught through artificial intelligence. This innovative educational model aims to personalize the learning process, adapting to the needs of each student. "We observe an increased interest of students for specialized camps in a certain academic or vocational field in order to test their skills and compatibility with a future career in that direction. Until recently, most requests were directed towards training courses in a foreign language, the balance now tends to lean towards specialized courses, students being interested in testing their skills, experimenting with fields and thus finalizing their future study choices" , explains Raluca Niculae, Camp and High School Department Manager. The diversification of educational options and the expansion towards new destinations and fields of study demonstrate an increasing openness of young Romanians to international opportunities, reflecting global trends and the emerging needs of the labor market.
