In a sea of bad news, there are also small islands meant to keep optimism afloat. Access to clean drinking water is highly important, and significant strides have been made in recent decades in this regard. The National Institute of Statistics (INS) announces that in 2022, 74.9% of Romania's resident population had access to the public water supply system. According to INS data, in 2022, 14,277,262 people were connected to public water supply networks, representing an increase of 99,455 people compared to 2021. This growth was driven by the connection of the population to newly constructed water supply networks.
At the level of development regions, in 2022, the highest proportion of the population connected to the public water supply system, as a percentage of the total resident population, was recorded in the Bucharest-Ilfov region (94.1%), followed by the South-East region (89.5%). The lowest connection rate was recorded in the North-East region (50.7%), followed by the South-West Oltenia region (63.4%). In 2022, the volume of distributed water was 1,937,909,000 cubic meters, approximately 540,539,000 cubic meters more than in 2021. The most significant increase was recorded in agriculture, with the volume of distributed water being 464,177,000 cubic meters higher. The largest quantities of distributed water were recorded in the Buzău-Ialomiţa (31.4%) and Argeş-Vedea (16.1%) hydrographic basins.
