Bogdan Olteanu yesterday resigned from the position of deputy governor of the National Bank of Romania, after he was detained by the National Anticorruption Department and placed under house arrest by the supreme court, on allegations that he has been paid a million Euros to use his influence.
The former president of the Chamber of Deputies made the following statement when coming out of detention: "This is a difficult moment. It is a sad moment and a very sad period, I hope it ends as soon as possible. I want to get the acquittal as soon as possible so I can start living a normal life again. Up until that time, I will do what my honor and my respect for the institution I have belonged to require. I will hand in my resignation as soon as possible from the management of the National Bank of Romania and I will continue to defend myself in the courts".
PNL co-president Vasile Blaga yesterday said that the current Board of Directors of the National Bank of Romania can function until September 1st with one of its members missing, and he said that the nomination for the vacant seat will belong to the liberals. According to Vasile Blaga, there is a parliamentary algorithm that has always worked and been followed. "I don't see why it wouldn't be followed this time as well", the co-president of the PNL said, but he added that he won't mention any name for now.
