Daewoo Sales Drop In First 2 Months

In January and February Daewoo Craiova sales dropped 10% compared to the corresponding period of 2006, but this was not due to the first registration tax and the car maker is preparing to begin manufacturing Euro 4 engine cars this year, according Daewoo representatives, quoted by NewsIn.

Thus, in the first months of the current year, Daewoo sold 1.835 cars, less than the 2.059 units sold in January and February 2006. Last month, Romanians bought 901 cars, nearly 15% less than in February 2006, when the company sold 1.038 units.

Lat year, Daewoo Craiova sold over 23.000 cars in Romania, up 13% from 2005, when sales slightly surpassed 20.500 units. In fall last year the state became once again the owner of the Craiova factory and this year the privatisation will be finalized. The four companies interested in acquiring the factory are Ford, General Motors, Tata (India) and Chery (China).

According to data from the Association of Automotive Manufacturers and Importers in Romania (APIA), in 2006, Daewoo had a market share of 7,8% on the new car segment , being surpassed by Dacia and Renault.
