British pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline has announced plans to start producing AIDS medication in Brasov, Romania, in the second half of the year and begin exports in 2011. This is the second case of medicine production relocated by the British group to Brasov.

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has invested 10 million EUR to relocate the production of the antidepressant Seroxat from France and England to the Europharm factory in Brasov. The medicine will be exported to over 85 countries and generate an estimated revenue of some 300 million EUR in the next three years.

The company has already started preparations to relocate the production of Retrovir, an HIV/AIDS medicine, to Brasov. "The first exports are scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2011, after all registration procedures have been completed," the management announced. Plans are to produce over 10 million Retrovir capsules in Brasov by 2011.

GSK is also expecting Seroxat production to peak in 2010. The Europharm factory in Brasov will become an export base to European markets some 11 years after it was acquired by GSK for 29.25 million USD.
