Intelligence democracy

I think that the accusations uttered by deputy Elena Udrea against the interim boss of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI), general Florian Coldea, that he has influenced the outcome of the presidential elections in favor of Klaus Iohannis and that he is involved in politics are likely.

It all seems plausible to me, despite all those (many, as a matter of fact) who claim that it is all just an aberration launched by this "politician", so controversial for the preferential relationship she had with former president Traian Băsescu and who, now that she is in trouble, under judicial control and is about to lose her parliamentary immunity so that prosecution against her can begin.

It seems likely.

The suspicion that Ceauşescu's "Securitate" has continued, in other forms, to control our political, social and economic life is a general suspicion, and it is one that exasperates us, because any information that would confirm or deny that suspicion is impenetrable, due to the inherent secrecy of the Intelligence Services.

We, the regular citizens, have this suspicion that we are controlled by the secret services.

Now, when a woman who is at the center of the political power explicitly states that general Florian Coldea had asked her former husband, Dorin Cocoş, to pay 500,000 Euros to Sebastian Ghiţă, for Ghiţă's TV channel to actually denigrate Elena Udrea, well!, when that happens, there are plenty of leaders of opinion to deny that something like that could actually happen.

Why?!

Paradoxically, it is precisely this reaction, which is meant to contradict Elena Udrea, that in fact validates what she has to say - it confirms that the secret services control the mass-media and politics.

On what grounds can the accusation made by the deputy that the general has influenced the presidential elections be rejected?

Before the elections, Klaus Iohannis did not stand a chance against Victor Ponta.

In the political confrontation with Victor Ponta he was pulverized.

His victory, despite the hostility of the diaspora, caused by the awful organization of the elections in the voting precincts located abroad, is a "sociological mystery".

Why wouldn't the statement of Elena Udrea that the elections have been manipulated by the secret services be likely?

I for one, find it likely, and this would be a good time for a convincing, serious investigation, that would remove our suspicions that we have had for twenty five years now.

Instead of such an investigation, we find that the hearing of the executives of the SRI by the Parliamentary Commission is preceded by a "research" performed by the SRI itself!

Is that convincing?

Is that serious?

The SRI is investigating its own boss.

What results can we expect?!

"I do not think that the investigation that Mr. Coldea is conducting himself SRI will reveal anything, will have any results", Elena Udrea said.

Makes sense.

On one hand, the Parliamentary Commission that audits the SRI has a shady structure, comprising, aside from various controversial politicians, Sebastian Ghiţă himself -, the one that Elena Udrea is accusing - who is often suspected of being an undercover agent of the SRI, and who is the beneficiary of numerous contracts with the state.

But, the Commission also includes PSD deputy Daniel Savu, former officer of the SRI, UNPR deputy Liviu Codîrlă, who has been a member of four political parties since 2004, and UDMR deputy Verestoy Atilla, whose name appears in scandals concerning illegal forest stripping.

Is any of that convincing?

Is any of that serious?

Who is controlling who, is it the Commission that audits the SRI, or is it the SRI that controls the Commission?

What results are we expecting?!

In spite of this, I can tell you that in the last fifteen years, we have made progress in this matter.

Because, in the year 2000, president Emil Constantinescu publicly said: "I've been defeated by the secret services".

Back then, no investigation took place.

This time we are actually getting one!

It's something!

Fifteen years from now, maybe we'll get a serious, convincing investigation, to find out if the people actually have any power.

Until then, let's be happy that we are living in a democracy...
