Non-performing loans remain a factor of concern for the banking system, but an indirect help may come from politicians.

Laszlo Diosi, the general manager of OTP Bank Romania, considers that Romania isn't doing as badly as other countries in the region, when it comes to non-performing loans: "The tidal wave has gone and there will be a recovery, especially since we have an electoral year - the net revenues will increase and this will have positive effect".

Nevertheless, Laszlo Diosi expects a new peak of non-performing loans, in the short term.

He said: "In the beginning of 2008, we were doing very well, but then the non-performing loans started appearing, which peaked in the second semester of 2011 (14.4%). Then, we had a small drop, but we shouldn't be too optimistic. A new high will appear in April-May, given the fact that people will need more money for the holidays".

According to Laszlo Diosi, one positive factor is that there is cautiousness in the banking sector, provisions are being set up. "The fact that things are being handled as they should is a good sign for investors", Mr. Diosi said, who went on to say: "When it comes to non-performing loans there is no risk for investors or for the economy".
