US-based Microchip has selected Bucharest as the venue of their first technology center in Eastern Europe, after having opened similar centers in India, Switzerland and the US. CEO Steve Sanghi said the decision was based on the level of workforce education, infrastructure, the cost of living, the number of English speakers and the university education system.

Opened in July 2006, the technology center was officially inaugurated yesterday and will have 30 employees by end-2008 and 100 employees in four years. Attending the inauguration, Chairman of the IT&C Committee of the Chamber of Deputies Varujan Pambuccian said: "Unlike China and India, Romania has limited human resources and needs to use them carefully. This is why I think it is very important that, unlike other companies who employ Romanians for call centers or other average activities, this company has decided to invest in researchers."

Microchip was established in 1989, has 4,500 employees worldwide and is listed on NASDAQ. Last year"s sales amounted to 1.03 billion USD.
