A jersey worn by legendary baseball player Babe Ruth has set a new record for the most expensive sports item ever sold at auction, fetching an impressive 21.3 million euros ($24.12 million). This record far surpassed the previous one, set just a month before, when another New York Yankees jersey sold for 11.8 million euros. The record for the most expensive sports collectible was previously held by a baseball card featuring Mickey Mantle, another famous Yankees player, which was bought for 11.2 million euros in August 2022. In terms of sports equipment of game-worn jerseys, Michael Jordan's jersey, worn in Game 1 of the 1998 NBA Finals, held the record for euro9 million, an amount reached at auction in September 2022. This new record underscores the growing interest and value of collectibles from the world of sports, since until 2022, no object had exceeded the symbolic threshold of ten million dollars. The jersey worn by Babe Ruth, which sold for this impressive sum, is linked to a historic moment in the 1932 World Series final against the Chicago Cubs, when legend has it that Ruth indicated with his finger the direction in which he would throw the ball, then succeeded a memorable home run. The Yankees then won the game and the final, confirming their status as a top team.
