Trade unions representing social workers, including those specialized in children protection, yesterday announced that they were preparing to stage major protests to express their profound grief with the existing salary scheme.

The ongoing economic and financial crisis has also affected social workers, who do not have a clear financing system, unions claim. "Social workers are very poorly paid, so the personnel turnover is quite great. For certain jobs, we have absolutely no candidates whenever we post a job vacancy," the union leaders said.

Among others, the unions also want better representation in the law and further clarifications to the status of maternal assistants and to the provisions regarding salary increments for certain labour conditions. "We are making a public warning that we will use all the means a union can use - pickets, rallies, strikes - to obtain the employees" rights," the union leaders said.
