The Deepfake phenomenon is significantly changing the online fraud landscape

Versiunea în limba română

Cybercriminals are constantly refining their working methods. Specialists from the National Directorate for Cyber Security (DNSC) warn that the Deepfake phenomenon has brought significant changes to the online fraud landscape. During election campaigns, this phenomenon can "significantly influence the opinion and vote of voters". DNSC has created the Deepfake Guide, which can help recognize online traps.

"The Deepfake phenomenon has brought significant changes to the online fraud landscape, and the DNSC team wants to remind you of several important aspects to consider while browsing the internet. It is crucial to be vigilant in the online environment!", the specialists said, showing what deepfake is, what is the technology behind the phenomenon, who are the target groups, but also how deepfake materials are made. In addition, specialists warn of the dangers in the electoral context: "In the current digital age, in which the border between reality and fiction is constantly blurring, the electoral process goes beyond the simple confrontation of ideologies and political promises, transforming into a complex ideological battleground. Deepfake technologies, capable of realistically synthesizing images and voices, can significantly influence the opinion and vote of voters during electoral campaigns, having a major impact on the democratic process".

They refer to several aspects: - Impact on politicians: A politician's reputation can be seriously affected by fabricated Deepfake videos, which can discredit his image and damage his chances of winning the elections. The spread of disinformation through Deepfake can manipulate public perception of the politician's character and program, negatively affecting his political career. - Impact on political parties: Deepfake can be used as a strategic tool to discredit rival parties, by creating fake materials that present them in a negative position. Promoting one's own party's agenda through Deepfake can be an effective way to influence public opinion and attract voters. Inappropriate use of Deepfake by political parties can lead to scandals and loss of public trust in the political system. - Impact of interest groups: Deepfake can be used by interest groups within a country to manipulate public opinion on civic issues. Creating fake content adapted to local contexts can intensify or calm discontent related to certain issues or events. The use of Deepfake by interest groups can lead to the polarization of society and an erosion of democratic public discourse". The internet sometimes seems like a minefield where it is very difficult to move safely.
