The first artificial canoe circuit will be made near the Nădlac - Arad - Timişoara highway segment, through a partnership between the Mayoralty of Arad and PORR Tehnobau und Umwelt AG Vienna, the developer of the highway, which will create a man-made lake near the belt highway. The mayor of Arad, Gheorghe Falcă, said the canoe track will have eight lanes, will be 2,200 meter long and 130 meter wide, and it will be able to host class A competitions. Comparable tracks exist in Munich, Mexico and Paris. The canoe track will be located in the south-eastern area of the city of Arad, near the Mure river and the Ceala Forest.
In order to create the canoe track, the mayoralty of Arad has asked that the Ministry of Defense assign over to the mayoralty a plot of land of 93,679 sqm, which was previously used to host a military shooting range. The mayor of Arad mentioned that the canoe circuit will be completed by 2011, at the same time as the Arad-Timişoara road segment. On the same location, the Western University "Vasile Goldiş" of Arad will create athletic fields and leisure locations. The "Vasile Goldiş" university bought 12 hectares from the mayoralty in order to raise several buildings for medical use. As the location was not safe enough for the intended use, due to its flooding hazards, the university opted to use the land for sports and leisure facilities.
