The City of Iasi intends to apply for 670 million EUR worth of EU funds made available to Romania. Mayor Gheorghe Nichita announced that 34 projects had been prepared already with a view to improve the city infrastructure.

"We have identified the projects and tasked City Hall officials to manage them and secure funding. I believe there are premises that Iasi become the second economic center of Romania, after Bucharest," he said.

So far, Iasi has failed to obtain non-reimbursable EU funds for any of their major investment projects. This time, the mayor is aiming for 670 million EUR, which is four times more than the local budget for this year, which happens to be the largest in the last 18 years.

The mayor is planning to rehabilitate all streets (200 million EUR), upgrade the heating system for consumers (92 million EUR), modernize the public transportation system (43.8 million EUR), renovating the old city center (30 million EUR), renovating other areas of the city (80 million EUR), building a passageway (22.5 million EUR), an integrated IT system for the municipality (2.75 million EUR), a public information system (4.2 million EUR) and others.
