Mircea Geoană resigned, yesterday, from the position of Deputy Secretary General of NATO, after having previously informed Jens Stoltenberg, the Secretary General of the military alliance, about this gesture. According to the document submitted to the head of NATO, Geoană's resignation effectively comes into effect on September 10, when any activity carried out within the institution in Brussels will cease.

According to a press release issued by NATO, Jens Stoltenberg thanked Geoana for his work within the international organization: "Mircea served NATO for almost five years. His focus on technology and emerging security challenges has been instrumental in driving innovation in the Alliance. He is a true transatlantic, and his work with partners has greatly benefited NATO. I wish him all the best for the future."

The cited source recalls that Mircea Geoană is the first Romanian to hold the position of Deputy Secretary General, being also the first representative of the states that joined NATO after the end of the Cold War to hold this high-ranking position.

According to NATO, Mircea Geoană's duties will be temporarily taken over from September 10 by Boris Ruge, deputy general secretary for political affairs and security policy, until a new deputy general secretary of the military alliance is appointed.

Immediately after submitting his resignation, Mircea Geoană stated in a post on the official Facebook account that it was the honor of his life to be in the leadership of NATO and thanked Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg "for trust and friendship".

"Together, over the past 5 years, we've been through many difficult times, but we've also shared countless achievements with our outstanding team. As I move on to a new chapter, I look with pride at the memorable time spent in the service of the most important Alliance in history", wrote Mircea Geoană, without making any mention of his possible candidacy in the presidential elections on November 24, although the press writes that it is preparing for this step..
