Nokia"s industrial site in Jucu, Cluj County, may be double the initial estimate of 500 persons, which was announced upon the beginning of the investment in the spring of 2007. Daniel Don, director of the Cluj County Employment Agency (AJOFM), yesterday announced that the number of employees would actually reach 1,000.

"Nokia has started recruitment pending the opening of the factory, which is scheduled for February 11th. So far, approximately 100 high school educated people and 50 university graduates have been recruited," he said.

Nokia"s site in Cluj is one of the largest investments Romania has seen since the fall of communism. To facilitate the start-up, the Cluj County Council started the construction of an industrial park of 159 hectares, of which Nokia will occupy 90 hectares and subcontractors the rest. Amenities will cost the County some 33 million EUR.

The park will be connected to the city of Cluj through an urban highway. Forecastas estimate that the park will generate some 15,000 jobs in total and attract 200 million EUR in investments. In 2010, taxes paid on the salaries of Nokia and the subcontractors" employees will amount to 59 million EUR.
