The losses incurred by the Palestinians as a result of the Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip represents a national disaster, reminiscent of the Independence War of 1948 -1949, claims Palestinian prime minister Salam Fayyad.
He further added: "What the people of Gaza are going through now is a humanitarian catastrophe. It is a new Nakba, something that hasn"t happened since 1949".
Palestinians consider that Israel"s declaration of independence of May 1948, was a catastrophe (Nakba).
According to Israel, during the 13 days of assault on Gaza, against the Hamas militants, over 660 Palestinians were killed.
The conflict in the Gaza Strip threatens to escalate, after at least three missiles were launched from the north of Israel against Lebanon, most likely in support of Hamas, experts believe. The Israeli army has announced that it has opened fire in retaliation aiming at the source of the missiles.
