The two newest EU members, Romania and Bulgaria, are looking forward to an expected boom of air travel, similar to the one experienced by their neighbours who joined the EU in 2004, according to an article published in the Financial Times Deutschland, quoted by Rompress. The two countries also anticipate an increase in the number of foreign tourists
"For 2007, we think there will be double the number of foreign tourists in Romania," said Gheorghe Fodoranu, the head of the Romanian Association of Travel Agents. In anticipation of EU membership, Bulgaria and Romania have dropped protectionist measures designed to support their national flagship carriers. Along with other low-cost carriers, Slovakia-based airline SkyEurope already operates flights to Bucharest and Sofia. Thus, as of January 15th, Hungary-based operator Wizz-Air launches the first low-cost direct flight from Bucharest to London. The round-trip fare is approximately 150 EUR including tax, that is some 90 EUR less than British Airways" fare for the same route.
Low cost flights prices might fall further as competition heats up. As of January 1st, the access of low-cost airlines became even easier, as operators with a European Union air carrier licence no longer needs government permission. Taking into account Romania and Bulgaria"s fast growing economies, low-cost carriers will be interested in entering these markets.
