Italian airline Alitalia SpA will actually lose less money this year than estimated, due to lower fuel prices, MF announced without indicating any source.
Alitalia has recently estimated overall losses of 262 million EUR (386 million USD) in 2009, according to the Italian daily. Earlier this year, the airline reported H1/09 operating losses of 273 million EUR.
The Alitalia management noted that the introduction of low-cost flights departing from the Malpensa Airport in Milan and operated by the Air One fleet would be a key element of the company"s business plan. A month ago, Alitalia announced they could transform Air One, a local competitor acquired in December 2008, into a low-cost airline.
