Dinu Patriciu takes into consideration the possibility to acquire the 25.1% stake in "Rompetrol Group" Netherlands currently hold by OMV, if the Austrian company would buy "Petrom" and would have to sell its stake, in order to avoid monopoly. Mr. Thomas Huemer, representative of the OMV press office, declared that "We are going to take a decision concerning our stake in Rompetrol in due time. Everything else is speculation. By the end, it is a legal decision." According to Dinu Patriciu, the "Rompetrol" turnover for the current year will be about USD 1.6 billion. "For the first quarter - he said - the operational profit for the whole group is USD 18 million, and for Rompetrol Rafinare is USD 14 million."
He also added that "For the next two years, there is an opportunity window for regional expansion within the Black Sea area, and we have to take advantage of it.
Rompetrol is going to invest, this year also, about USD 20 to 25 million for expansion. We don't want to exceed 28% of our domestic market, but we target a 3% to 4% market share in Turkey, a country with 74 million inhabitants." According to "Rompetrol" president, the real competition on the Romanian market will begin after "Petrom" will be privatized, and this will be the engine for the regional expansion. He stated that the Romanian refining industry needs at least USD 600 million investments in the coming years in order to reach the same efficiency as the EU refineries.
