On December 1st, 1918, on the National Assembly of Alba Iulia, consisting of 1228 delegates, who had the support of 100,000 people gathered at the event from all over the country, adopted a Resolution which consecrated the joining of all the Romanians in Transylvania and the entire Banat to the motherland. This is the briefest way in which to make a synopsis of a major event in our history.
It has become a habit that on December 1st, various characters drop their working garments and put on the shining clothes of shallow patriotism and everything they say starts to revolve around the blue, yellow, and red. Rusty tanks and planes are taken out from their hangars and put on display so people can admire them briefly. The televisions broadcast live images of seas of boiled beans with meat floating in it, miles of sausages roasting and enthuse over Romanians who achieved success, most of them after immigrating. This is the visible part of the event, and the one that isn't worth much, if anything.
But if deep within your heart you feel something still stirring on this day, when you hear the anthem and see the flag, that's good, it's even a reason to celebrate. If you are part of that category, we wish you: "Many happy returns!" If you don't feel anything special on this day, it's nothing to make a fuss over on this day, we just wish you: "Enjoy your day off!"
