In order to help its customers that are facing financial difficulties, Carrefour România launched the Private label product range, and expects it to account for 10% of its total sales in 2010.

Arnaud Dussaix, purchasing and logistics director, said: "The Carrefour private label range of products includes 1,200 new products, most of them made in Romania. We are hoping to have 3,500 - 4,000 private label products in the coming years. These products account for 6% of our sales, but we estimate their weight will reach 10% by 2010".

Private label foodstuffs are made in Romania, with some of them made in France and Poland, whereas electronics and household appliances are made in China.

Once the project develops, private label products made in Romania will be exported to countries such as Bulgaria, Russia, Poland and Turkey, said Patrice Lespagnol, General Manager of Carrefour.

For this project, Carrefour has concluded contracts with approximately 40 Romanian producers, which include Farmec, Vascar, European Drinks, Danone.

Gabriela Ciuburciu, director of canned meat maker Vascar, for instance, said the company she leads expects its turnover to increase 20% YOY in 2009, following its partnership with the French retailer.

About one third of the 16% increase in turnover seen by Vascar in the first half of 2009 comes from its partnership with Carrefour. Last year, the company reported a turnover of 5 million Euros.

Carrefour owns 22 hypermarkets and 24 supermarkets in Romania.
