The average price of electricity traded on the day-ahead market (PZU) in Q1 2014 was 143.96 lei/MWh, up 3.1% over the median price of the first six months of 2013, according to OPCOM data.
Ion Lungu, the president of the Association of Electricity Suppliers in Romania (AFEER) told us: "The increase is not significant and can be explained through the increase of energy exports compared to the similar period of 2013, and through a lower output by the wind farms. Our perception of the market is that demand for energy was relatively stable".
He says that the bulk of the exports in the first semester was possible because Romania had lower prices than the neighboring countries, but also because Serbia has imported more energy in May and June, following the devastating floods.
According to the OPCOM, in the first six months, the average price of energy deliverable based on the PCCB contracts was 172.3 lei/MWh. The energy traded in the first quarter on the PCCB market managed by the OPCOM had an average price of 168.2 lei/MWh, slightly down over the price of energy being delivered for which the contracts were concluded last year.
However, the president of the AFEER predicts stability for the coming period, in terms of the evolution of the demand for electricity and prices: "I wouldn't rule it out if small fluctuations in both directions occurred, depending on the export opportunities and the evolution of domestic demand.
The co-generation tax for exports has been eliminated, but I don't expect the volume of exports will increase, because the profits from the elimination of the tax went into Transelectrica's accounts. The suppliers are vying for exporting and they are bidding high for the transit. Therefore, I don't think exports will increase significantly. We can't predict exactly what will happen after Romania's integration in the regional energy market, announced for November. We may see a price increase in the short term".
Suppliers expect stability on the PCCB market for long term contracts, and they say it will not experience major fluctuations.
In the first half of the year, 10.5 million MWh were traded on the spot (day-ahead - PZU) market, worth 349.6 million Euros. The value of the energy delivered based on the PCCB contracts was 14.23 million Euros. In the first six months, the operators have traded over 17 million MWh on the PCCB with delivery in the coming years.
• Romanian National Statistics Institute (INS): The energy consumption of the economy has decreased 1.4% in the first five months
The final consumption of electricity of the Romanian economy was 20908.1 million Kwh in the first five months, down 1.4% over the similar period of 2013, according to the National Statistics Institute. Public lighting consumption dropped 23.8%, and the consumption of the population decreased 2.4%.
During the reviewed period, the resources of electricity amounted to 26273.6 million KWh, up 1411.0 million KWh (+5.7%) over the similar period of 2013. The increase of the electricity volume was mostly caused by the increase in output, by 1558 million KWh (+6.3%), the National Statistics Institute also notes.
The output of thermoelectric plants was 11,592.3 million KWh, up 840.7 million KWh (+7.8%). the output of hydroelectric plants was 7,289.3 million KWh, up 488.5 million kWh (+7.2%), and that of nuclear-electric plants was 4,738.6 million KWh, up 4.2 million kWh, (+0.1%).
The output of windfarms in the first five months was 2,062.3 million KWh, down 102.2 million KWh YOY, and solar energy output during the same period stood at 447.1 million KWh, up 326.8 million KWh over the similar period of 2013.
The volume of exported electricity was 2355.8 million KWh, up 1876.3 million KWh.
The internal technological consumption by the grids and plants was 3,009.7 million KWh, down 166.7 million KWh, (-5.2%).
