The new paradigm in the sector of energy services is the concept of smart grids, which involves ensuring, for every user, the energy volume and quality that they need, when they need it, with a minimum resource and raw materials usage and a minimal impact on the environment, said Ph. D. Eng. Eden Mamut, head of the Institute for Nanotechnologies and Alternative Energy Sources of the "Ovidius" university of Constanţa.

Smart grids will be the backbone of the future carbon-emission free energy system, according to professor Mamut, who thinks that they will allow the integration of large volumes of energy from renewable sources, produced onshore and offshore, and the integration of electric vehicles, while also preserving the availability for the production of energy from conventional sources and the adequacy for the energy system.

He explained: "The integration of the markets at the level of the European Union brings energy suppliers in Romania face to face with unprecedented competition, while the markets and their legislation are in the process of being completely redefined. The stake of conquering the future markets consists in achieving ecological innovation as a fundamental principle of the organizational culture and the deep knowledge of the complexity of the concepts of the < < green > > economy".

Professor Eden Mamut said that universities can represent a partner with a major potential to increase and consolidate the capacity of energy service to compete the future unified European market.

He further said that smart grids are capable of achieving the interaction and the direct communication between consumers (households or companies), the other users of the grid and energy suppliers. In combination with time-specific pricing, they will provide consumers with the opportunity to directly control and manage their consumption for the first time, while at the same time providing strong incentives for efficient energy use.
