No less than 105,537 companies suspended their operations in the first eight months of 2009, which is 12 times more than the 8,241 cases logged in the corresponding period of 2008, according to the information published on the website of the National Office of the Trade Register (ONRC) of Romania.
According to this information, Bucharest leads the statistic of cases of suspended operations with 16,313 companies, up 13 times from the 1,162 cases recorded in the first eight months of 2008. Cluj came second with 6,350 suspended companies, up by an amazing 2429.88% year on year. Brasov is third with 5,047 suspended companies, up 11 times from the 410 cases reported for the first eight months of 2008.
The number of cases of voluntary company dissolution across the country surged to 13,270 in the first eight months of the year, up by 512.37% from the 2,167 cases reported for the first eight months of 2008. Again, Bucharest leads the statistic with 3,376 cases of voluntary dissolution, followed by Bihor County with 907 cases and Arges County with 735 cases. The report for voluntary strike-off reveals 26,805 such cases in the first eight months of 2009, up by 181.74% year-on-year.
At the end of August, the total number of active businesses in Romania reached 1,043,547, of which 337,053 companies and 706,494 self-employed individuals. According to the Trade Register, the number of new company registrations decreased by 18.5% between January and August 2009, to 82,650 from 101,448 in the first eight months of 2008.
