Residents of Brasov and tourists can now enjoy a free wireless Internet connection in the city"s central square - Piata Sfatului. Mayor George Scripcaru and Secretary of State of the Ministry of Communications and Information Society Marius Fecioru personally tested the connection. "Anyone can now access the Internet from Piata Sfatului. The antennas have a range between 200 and 1,000 metres, reaching to all the benches on which any potential user may sit," Fecioru said.

Brasov is the second city in the country to have such connection after Bucharest. Another two antennas will be installed in Brasov by the end of the month. One will be located in the Central Park covering a radius nearing the Prefecture. The position of the second one has not yet been determined. An additional antenna will be installed near the town hall of the alpine resort of Predeal, Brasov County. The bandwidth is 2 Mb/second, guaranteed and symmetrical. The antenna can handle at least 50 concurrent connections.

"It is especially tourists, who need to access the Internet this way. It is quite common in the rest of Europe to be able to access the Internet without any problems in the city centre," said Mayor Scripcaru. The hotspots installed in Brasov are part of a programme of the Ministry of Communications which will include at least 350 hotspots across the country. The programme is financed entirely by the Ministry. The first phase, which comprises 30 hotspots, costs 150,000 EUR.
