• The contract worth EUR 9 million to be signed in the coming weeks
"Voestalpine Steel Service Center Romania" has completed the evaluation process of the tenders submitted for the construction of the steel plant of Giurgiu. Stefan Einfalt, General Manager of "Voestalpine Steel Service Center Romania" said: "The evaluation process took place according to the European regulations on calls for tenders, and the winner is < Cominco > SA. The negotiations for the contract are currently under way, and the selection of the entrepreneur will be made in the following weeks. 13 calls for tenders were reviewed during the selection process".
Florin Cămăraşu, the general manager of "Cominco", said: "We are happy that we have won this major project, financed using European funds. The value of the contract is approximately 9 million Euros, and the works are scheduled to last 12 months. According to procedure, the contract needs to be signed within 10 days after the completion of the negotiations. Also according to procedure, if we sign the contract ten days from now, work could begin by the end of this month".
Florin Cămăraşu also said that the biggest project financed using European funds that "Cominco" will be working on (worth approximately 11 million Euros) is the construction of an ecologic landfill in Suceava.
The "Voestalpine Steel Service Center" of Giurgiu involves the construction of a hangar used to house production, of a warehouse, a multi-storey office building, a social building and a railway. The investment is estimated to cost EU 20 million, of which EUR 5 million (18.5 million lei) will be co-financed by the European Union, as part of the Sectoral Operational Program for the Increase of Economic Competitiveness. The steel manufacturing plant will have a planned output capacity of 130,000 tons/year, which can be extended to 260,000 tons/year of fine processed sheet metal. "Voestalpine" acquired the plot of land (which has a surface of 40,000 sqm) from the Mayoralty of Giurgiu in the year 2007.
