The cultural world can offer valuable lessons to those dealing with global politics. An example comes from our country itself, where a Ukrainian and two Russians walked on the same stage without problems. Ukrainian pianist Roman Lopatynskyi was named the winner of the Piano Section at the George Enescu International Competition 2024, following a remarkable performance of Concerto no. 2 in B flat major for piano and orchestra op. 83 by Johannes Brahms. Together with the "George Enescu" Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of the conductor Christian Reif, Lopatynskyi conquered the jury and the audience, obtaining the 1st Prize in the 19th edition of the prestigious competition. In the competition final, 31-year-old Lopatynskyi was joined on the podium by Second Prize winner Tatiana Dorokhova (Russia) and third-placed Evgeny Konnov (Russia). Dorokhova performed the Concerto no. 1 in D minor for piano and orchestra op. 15 by Johannes Brahms, and Konnov delighted the audience with Concert no. 1 in B flat minor for piano and orchestra op. 23 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
• Prestigious jury and valuable prizes
The competition was evaluated by an international jury, made up of renowned pianists such as Lilya Zilberstein (President of the Jury), Luiza Borac, Dana Borşan, Sina Kloke and others. The first prize of the 19th edition of the George Enescu International Competition is worth 15,000 euros net, the second prize 10,000 euros net, and the third prize 5,000 euros net. Also, the laureates of the 2024 George Enescu International Competition will be offered the chance to perform in the 2025 and 2026 editions of the George Enescu International Festival and Competition, as well as in concerts organized during the philharmonic seasons in the country. As part of the George Enescu International Competition, the record company Electrecord offers the winners of the first prizes from the cello, violin and piano sections, the opportunity to record works by George Enescu, with the possibility of being transposed on a dedicated double album. The Enescu 2024 Competition trophies are made by the artist Mihai Băncilă. Three special prizes were also offered during the Awards Gala: The Radu Lupu Award for the best interpretation of a work by George Enescu, worth 3,000 euros net, was won by Roman Lopatynskyi, who performed Sonata no. 3 in D major op. 24. The prize for the best interpretation of the assigned work - Bulz for piano by Diana Rotaru worth 2,000 euros net, was won by Tatiana Dorokhova. The Constanţa Erbiceanu Award, offered by the Erbiceanu Cultural Foundation, worth 2,500 euros net, which is attributed to a Romanian competitor, was won by Alexa Stier. The Public Prize, worth 1,000 euros net, was won by Evgeny Konnov, who was voted by the public from 15 countries: Malaysia, Croatia, Kazakhstan, Estonia, Argentina, North Macedonia, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Ukraine , Italy, Russia, the United States of America, Germany and Romania.
The Ukrainian pianist Roman Lopatynskyi was born in 1993 in Kiev and is one of the most appreciated young pianists in Ukraine. He is a laureate of over 20 international piano competitions, such as the Hamamatsu International Piano Competition, the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition in Bolzano, the International Competition for Young Pianists in Memory of Vladimir Horowitz in Kiev, the Arthur Rubinstein Piano Master International Competition. Since 2017, Roman Lopatynskyi is a member of the Heidelberg Festival Academy. He is frequently invited to perform in concert halls and at renowned international festivals, such as Ginza Hall in Tokyo, Steinway Hall in New York, the Mariinsky International Piano Festival in St. Petersburg, the Next Generation Classic Festival in Bad Ragaz, the Heidelberger Fruhling Music Festival, and has successfully collaborated with the National Symphony Orchestra and the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Ukraine, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, the Saarbrucken Kaiserslautern German Broadcasting Philharmonic Orchestra, the Verona Arena Orchestra and the Bologna Teatro Philharmonic Orchestra. He also made his debut at the Musikverein and the Konzerthaus in Vienna.
The George Enescu International Competition takes place under the High Patronage of the President of Romania, being a cultural project financed by the Government of Romania through the Ministry of Culture and organized by ARTEXIM.
