Valery Kuzmin, the ambassador of the Russian Federation in Bucharest, was summoned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in connection with the Russian drone that crashed two days ago on Romanian territory, according to a press release issued by the public institution.
The cited document states: "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly protests against the incident caused by the uncontrolled crash of a drone used in the attack on the Ukrainian port infrastructure on the night of December 13/14, in an uninhabited area located about 4 kilometers upstream from the town of Grindu. This represents a new violation of Romania's airspace, contrary to international law. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly requests the cessation of repeated attacks against the Ukrainian population and civil infrastructure, as well as the irresponsible escalation by the Russian Federation of the security situation, including at the border between Romania and Ukraine. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterates its firm condemnation of these attacks against civilian targets, which violate the norms of international humanitarian law and are considered war crimes".
The Ministry of National Defense (MApN) announced yesterday that a 1.5 meter deep crater was found as a result of the uncontrolled crash of a drone used in the attack on the Ukrainian port infrastructure.
The press release issued by MApN states: "Wednesday to Thursday, December 13/14, Russian forces continued drone attacks on the Ukrainian port infrastructure, in the vicinity of the border between Ukraine and Romania. The Ministry of National Defense monitored the situation in the border area and activated Air Police procedures, also notifying the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations regarding the areas in Tulcea and Galaţi counties that could have been affected by the risks associated with this situation. IGSU issued a RO-Alert message at 22:45, and the air alert status ended around 02:00".
According to the competent ministry, F-16 aircraft of the Romanian Air Force from the 86th Air Base in Feteşti and Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft of the German Air Force from the 57th Air Base "Mihail Kogălniceanu" were raised to perform surveillance missions of the national airspace.
MApN mentions: "The radar surveillance system of the Romanian Army indicated, during this situation, a possible unauthorized penetration into the national airspace, with a signal detected at low altitude on a route to the Grindu area, in Tulcea county. Based on information from the field regarding a possible impact on the territory of Romania, mixed MApN/MAI teams traveled to the area during the night and reported, this morning, that a 1.5 m deep crater was identified as a result of the uncontrolled crash of a drone used in the attack on the Ukrainian port infrastructure, in an uninhabited perimeter located about 4 km upstream from the town of Grindu". According to MApN, measures were taken to secure the area and the competent structures were notified to collect evidence and carry out investigations, according to procedures. At the same time, MApN forces will continue airspace monitoring and research missions in areas where risks may arise as a result of these situations.
